During the decade of the fifties and part of the sixties, the owners of The Cónsulawere the couple DAVIS, of California, Bill and Annie Davis were big friends of the North American writer and Nobel Prize, Ernest Hemingway. Also the rondeño bullfighter Antonio Ordoñez was among his Spanish friends. During the summer of 1959 Ernest Hemingway had to write a series of artcles for the North American magazine “Life” on the bulls and on the rivalry between both big ones of the bullfighting of those years: Antonio Ordoñez and Luis Michael Dominguín. The series of articles turns into the last book that Hemingway was writing “The dangerous summer”.

This way the great American writer describes his arrival to The Cónsula:

” After landing in Algeciras we direct for ourselves house of the family Davis, Bill, Annie and their two sons, in a villa called ” La Cónsula ” placed in the mountains that surround Malaga. There was a railing before which guard was mounting a man when it was not closed. Then there was coming a long way of gravel surrounded with cypresses. It had a garden as precious as the Botanist of Madrid.

The house was enormous, magnificent and fresh, of spacious rooms and carpets of esparto in each of them and in the corridors; everywhere they were finding many books, old maps and good pictures adorning the walls. They were having fireplaces for when it was been cold. There was a swimming pool that they were filling with water from a spring of the mountain and did not have telephone.

It was possible to go I take off but in May it was cold and the moccasins were turning out to be more adapted for the stairs of marble. We were eating marvellously and were drinking well. We were leaving ours others alone some, and when on having got up in the morning it was going out to the balcony that was crossing the whole front of the second floor and was looking over the pines of the garden it was doing the mountains and at the time that one heard the sea whistling to the wind between the trees, then I understood that I had never been in a more beautiful site(place). It was ideal to work and I began to write immediately. “

The happy initiative of the Government Counselor of Labor of the Junta de Andalusia and the Town hall of Malaga of creating a flaming School of Hotel and catering business in this privileged place, open up for “The Cónsula” a new chapter in his already long history, in which we are names as Ernest Hemingway or Gerald Brenan.
